Simple meal-time support for digestion, absorption, and brain fuel

Most people think they have a nutrient problem when they really have a digestion and absorption problem.

Step 1: Stomach acid sets the stage

Stomach acid is one of the most overlooked tools in digestion.

The normal pH of the stomach is acidic, 1.5 to 3.5 on the pH scale. This level of acidity is strong enough to denature proteins and would damage most tissues if not protected by the stomach’s thick mucosal lining, which we will talk about soon.

This acidity does several important things:

  • helps break down protein
  • activates protein digestive enzymes (pepsin)
  • supports absorption of nutrients like iron, calcium, magnesium, and vitamin B12
  • helps defend against unwanted bacteria, viruses, and parasites in food
  • signals the lower esophageal sphincter, or LES, to stay closed

That last point surprises a lot of people.

The LES is the doorway between the esophagus and the stomach. When the stomach is acidic enough, that doorway gets the signal to stay tightly closed. When stomach acid is too low, the LES may become lax, which can contribute to reflux.

So in many cases, the issue is not too much acid. It is poor acid signaling.

Low stomach acid may also contribute to:

  • poor protein digestion
  • bloating and gas
  • reduced absorption of calcium, iron, folate, B6, and B12
  • greater risk of bacterial overgrowth farther down the digestive tract

Some studies show that stomach acid tends to decline with age.

By age 60, our stomach acid production may be less than half of what it was in our 20s.
